Internships and Positions

***WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING TO for a Spring and Summer intern(s)*** for PR and Marketing who will work on strategic planning, social media relations, website updates and blog articles, new business research, photographic editorial submissions, marketing event coordination & execution, marketing planing, and brand maintenance. Kristin Greenlee Photography is interested in candidates who are eager to learn about the photography/design  or  wedding industries.  This is a PR/Marketing position (photography internships are  limited to the best… since you have a lot more client contact, you should be at least a senior or have some type of somewhat decent portfolio).

Candidates should be ready to rise to any challenge in a highly competitive industry, and solve problems in an innovative and independent environment. Work will be done both in our home based studio in North Fort Worth (in the Keller area, so be sure you are willing to drive here once a week if you apply) as well as remotely. Extremely proficient communication skills is an absolute must including proper written and verbal English skills. Familiarity of social networking, WordPress, Adobe Creative programs (Photoshop a MUST and Illustrator/InDesign a plus!), and comfort on Mac systems is STRONGLY preferred. You must have your own computer with at least Photoshop and Skype to work virtually.

This is about an 8 hrs a week internship for 12 weeks minimum. If you are a University student and you have specific guidelines, please get in touch about those requirements.

Please send a well thought out cover letter (seriously, make me believe you know something about my business and are genuinely interested. What can you contribute here, what do you really want to walk away with?) and resume via email to kristin (at) kristingreenlee .com  and make sure to read below because a lot of the same stuff applies! Then ALSO fill out the short application located here.

We have internships in the the following areas:
Marketing internships, PR internships, Graphic Design internships and on a limited basis Photography internships.

Photography Internships are 12-weeks min. Approximately, every Summer and Fall (Spring is generally the slow season for shooting and we generally don’t take photography interns in the Spring). Sometimes I’ll have two people a semester if it’s super busy. Photography internships are highly competitive… since you have the potential for more client contact, you should be at least a senior if in school and/or have a somewhat decent portfolio as evidenced either in print or webform for review). Please be aware that “photography” interns also do a lot of in-office not shooting related work! Just like photography business owners!

Our internships are unpaid, we think of them more as mentorships and super advanced real world training. However, if you are a KGP intern and you do not work hard or contribute something meaningful, then you will not be a KGP intern anymore. It’s really rather simple. I won’t force or convince anyone to be our intern -it’s actually quite a lot of extra work for me to teach and expose you to my business– but if you decide to be one I ask that you commit to the full 12-15 weeks, then I ask that you work hard and push yourself for the these short months. If you aren’t putting your heart into it, you will be let go. I believe in teaching. I believe in the age old practice in the arts of the apprenticeship program, but I’m not going to pour time and effort into teaching you if you aren’t going to put 100% effort and heart into it. That being said, you do have to have some basic skills before I can take you as an intern.

Interns are often college students, even college graduates who feel they have major holes in the education OR want/need more practical real world experience, portfolios, and the mighty stamp on the resume and good reference. I myself, graduated with a BFA, but straight out of school, while I had some technical skills of shooting and a lot of artsy-fartsy stuff, I didn’t know the first thing about marketing and how to make a living doing what I loved. I didn’t realize the in’s and out’s of what it takes to run a successful business. A intern could be a Mom with a hectic life who has been working on building her business and portfolio, a 9-5’er with big dreams of turning their hobby into their livelihood. KGP internships are dually focused on the areas of: 1) business management/marketing/PR and 2) technical skills/experience. Our hope is that you will be so successful in the program that you won’t want to leave, that you’ll prefer to stay and take on more (paid contracting) work with KGP, but many of our interns/mentees decide to go their own way and make their own path, you’ll have learned a whole lot in these short weeks–the kind of stuff that it’s tough to learn any other way than hands on experience!

Here’s what I’m asking from our Photography Interns:
You own a DSLR camera and a decent professional lens or two. oh and a flash.
You have at least a rudimentary understanding of shutter speed, aperture, and iso

From Graphic Design/PR:
Mad skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, and maybe InDesign and your own computer that can work them! WordPress, Social media, Skype

For PR and Marketing folks:
Laptops, great communication/phone skills and the ability to research! WordPress, social media, Skype

From Everyone:

You have your own ideas – even if you’re still working on them
You aren’t afraid to try everything
You don’t say ‘I can’t do that’
You have the ability to LEARN. For instance, you don’t know how to do something. You say, “sure, I can figure that out” and then you Google to your hearts content until you figure it out!
You are willing to photograph/or work on projects during your time with me – even if it’s not your style or preferred subject matter–you’ll do it and even act like you love it (because you’ll learn something)
You will read any materials/websites I actually give you to read and even find your own and show them to me because they are rad.
You will be available for about 8 hours a week split between virtual (read: just get it done in a timely manner, even if that’s at 2am) and in-person (read: once a week you come by my home-studio and we work together for about 3 hours).
You will also work on things/projects/exercises independently work in for review
You have a portfolio to show us – and you’re proud of your current work – no matter what it is. Give me that link, if you can’t show me the work, how do I know where you are at?
You are nice
You work hard
You want to learn
You will stare self-doubt in the face
You know when to be professional and when to let loose
You can commit to working with us for 12-15 weeks roughly
You will blog about your progress, projects, and shoots right here on the KGP blog for the world to see.
You are honest. This is my business, what puts food on my table-I better be able to trust you.

Everything I do is based on three principles:
Be professional
Do things that matter
Learn like you mean it

I’d like to make it clear that your progress during this internship will be primarily moved forward by you. I will help facilitate learning – but this isn’t photography/PR/Marketing 101, and even though I might cover the basics, it’s your responsibility as an intern to do your homework and practice on your own – so that I can get to the really fun stuff – the stuff that you won’t learn from a basic course or workshop. Also – this internship requires a lot of effort and mistakes – so stop aiming for perfection and get out of your head that you have to be someone you aren’t.
Please understand, this is an Internship with hands-on “learn while you do” type of learning. It’s not a full blown training program (how would I have time for that or be able to offer it free?), it’s not a bootcamp, it’s not anything like a typical teacher/student/classroom arrangement and you have to already come with some skills that can benefit the studio to build on.  You work along side us both shooting (if you are a photographer intern) and in the office doing the nitty-gritty “I didn’t know you had to do so much of this kinda stuff” work. You follow instructions, and I answer your questions – sometimes. If you don’t ask good questions, then I’m not giving up answers. It’s your job to ask better questions – and it’s our job to answer the good questions.

Sound good to you? Apply for a KGP Internship here.

So to review to apply for an internship you must:
1. Send a well thought out cover letter and resume (preferably via pdf) either via e-mail or through our internships.com listing. (Seriously, make me believe you know something about my business and are genuinely interested. Including what can you contribute here, not some terribly generic form letter you sent to a zillion other managers!)
2. Fill out the short application at the link above.
